Coffee with Thuy Nguyen

Joining us this week is Thuy Nguyen from Vietnam, who has just completed her Bachelor of Hospitality Management at Box Hill TAFE.

Tell us about your study experience?

It was an amazing experience for me because gave me the skills to use for my future career.

Can you give us a “top 3” for Box Hill TAFE?

Classmates, friendly environment

What advice would you give to someone starting your course?

Have a good level of English, allow yourself time to adjust if you’re homesick. It is totally normal. I was struggling at the beginning and criticising myself for being so homesick, but then I learnt it does not change anything if I kept that mindset.

What is your job now?

Did you find it easy to get a job after graduation?

It should have been easy as I studied hospitality but unfortunately I graduated at the time of COVID-19 so I only can be able to work part-time now.

How did you get from your institution to where you are now?

I tried my best at school, studied very hard and asked for help from my host family and friends. I am very happy with my results after graduating from Box Hill Tafe.

Describe a typical day?

  1. Fantastic
  2. Working hard
  3. Cook a lot of food

Have you been affected by COVID-19?

Yes. I just graduated and my part time job has been paused for a little while. Fortunately, I live with my host family in Australia so I don’t have to pay for rent. It is so important to be with a family during this unprecedented time.

What have you learnt about yourself?

I feel a lot more confident now than before.

Three words to describe your life during this time?

It is a very hard time, but we must get on and move forward.

What about the future?

Looking for jobs and opportunities!

What positives can be taken from the changes in our lives?

Staying motivated and focus on easier times ahead.
